Are You As Persuasive As Antony?

In Julius Caesar, Antony succeeds in turning the crowd against Caesar's assassins because his powerful speech appeals to his listeners emotions: grief, love, hatred, and gratitude. Brutus' speech, by contrast, is somewhat dry and analytical.

Emotional appeals in persuasion are especially effective when they include specific examples or personal experiences: see for example, Antony's words about the crown (III-2, lines 82-86) and his memories about Caesar's mantle (III-2, lines 158-161).

In your reading journal, you wrote an opinion statement about an issue that was important to you, followed by two or three emotional appeals you could make in a speech to support your opinion. In this blog, your job is to persuade your audience of your viewpoint by using some of those emotional appeals. Write a brief essay of approximately 200 words in which you try to convince your audience of a particular point of view.

Remember to open with a strong, attention-getting introductory sentence and follow up with several examples to support your opinion. Be careful to proofread for spelling and sentence structure before posting.

This assignment should be posted by no later than Sunday night.

Some say abortion is not murder, but if its not, then what is it? There are approximately 42 million abortions each and every year world wide and 1.3 million in the United States alone. To me, abortion is the killing of an innocent, unborn child. I’ve been told that I probably wouldn’t understand the reasoning for abortions because I, myself, have never been in that situation, and maybe that is true. But I believe as each of us grows older, we should accept the responsibilities that come from the choices we make.
These days, teenagers make up 52% of the abortion rate. Many are afraid to break the news to their parents so they decide to “take care of it”, while others bring up the excuse “I’m only sixteen!” If you didn’t want to have a baby, then wouldn’t it have been smarter to take better precautions? Another top reason why teenagers have abortions is because they know they will not be able to take care of it, whether they don’t have the money, or don’t live in a good environment. Responsibility is a key factor of growing up.
I truly believe there are other ways going about getting pregnant. There is always the option of putting the child up for adoption. One day the child could end up in a good home, with great parents who have stable jobs and will love it like their own. And you could be the reason for this. Having a child is a beautiful part of life, or so my parents say.
Abortion may or may not be against your religion, but is murder? Is the killing of something so fragile and innocent murder? You decide.

Doctor-assisted suicide of terminally ill patients: An act of mercy or murder? If you ask me, there's no murder involved here, just a person's right to chose whether or not they wish to continue their lives. Over 150,000 people die every day. That means 150,000 grandmothers, grandpa's, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters, and sons leave this earth forever. Wouldn't you rather it be on their terms than to have someone you love ripped away from you without them ever knowing what hit them? Assisted suicide gives these people the tiniest bit of control possible. They can say goodbye to everyone and not have to wait for death to come.
There are hundreads of thousands of terminally ill people who are suffering and are in pain every minute of every day.
Assisted suicide also has some other pros. Tremendous pain and suffering of patients can be saved, and the right to die should be a fundamental freedom of each person. Patients can die with dignity. Health care costs can be reduced, and the doctor's time can be freed up to work on savable patients. Prevention of suicide can also be construed as a violation of religious freedom, anguish of the patient's family and friends can be lessened, and they can say their final goodbyes, and finally the properly working and vital organs can be saved, allowing doctors to save the lives of others.
Some of these people can't eat, or feed themselves, and some can't even use the bathroom by themselves. Some of these people haven't walked or left a bed in ten years. Would you ever want to live to the point where a stranger has to wipe your own behind for you? How can you judge whether it is right for someone who faces the fear of dying everday?
I know that if i am ever faced with a terminally ill disease that's forcing me to watch the clock, asking God if this was my last minute alive, or if the last thirty seconds of my life are almost up, I will want to die on my own terms. Your whole life your faced with rules, and guidlines of people telling you how to live and whats proper to say and do, and when you are terminally ill and death is inevitably approaching, the last thing you want is to follow anyone else's rules.
I know for a fact, that I never want to live to the point where I can't feed myself and a stranger has to wipe my beind for me.I will want to die with some dignity and a chance to say goodbye to the people i love most in my life.

The death penalty. Is this form of punishment moral or cruel? To me, the death penalty is just another way for the government to feel almighty and powerful. They do not have the right to take away someone’s life. Although the criminal is at fault, there are other ways to carry out his/her punishment. Killing the criminal will not bring the victim back. Life in prison, although more moral, is more effective than a death sentence. What are we proving when we put a felon to death?
Is the death penalty the only way to carry out punishment? Statistics say that when dealing with a murder, jury members are more hesitant to convict a person if they are receiving death as their penalty. With life in prison or another discipline, the convict is more likely to be found guilty. The death penalty may be a last resort, but many like to see that last resort come into play, so they lie to have the fugitive killed. If this is happening, then you might as well get rid of all the laws our country is based on anyway to protect its citizens.
Two wrongs do not make a right. After you kill the felon, then what? The victim of the murder is still dead and the victim’s family is still suffering. Yes, the person who killed their loved one is dead, but there is more than one murderer in this world. It’s sad to say, but murder is not something the people in our world can avoid. Death is inevitable and we have to face it, but I don’t think that anyone should have their death planned out, no matter what they have done. This form of revenge does not solve anything, and people need to start seeing that.
Life imprisonment: not something criminals look forward to. Why would anyone accused of murder want to spend the rest of their lives in a prison when they have the choice to just die? I mean, it’s a faster way out of this world. They aren’t going anywhere besides to the bathroom once they get into that white room with a cot, so why not just die. They wouldn’t have to suffer anymore. Many feel sympathy for criminals when they find out they have been found guilty and their punishment is death, but when they get life in prison, people are not so sympathetic. Prison is a place of pain, humiliation, and accusation. You are treated like an animal. That seems like a worse type of punishment then death to me.
Does the fact that the murderer of a loved one is dead make a person happy again. The answer is no. They can’t replace that loved one, and they will still suffer. So, then, why are we killing the accused one? Wouldn’t the victim rather see their murderer tortured then just leaving the problem, not fixing it? The government is not to determine someone’s fate. Life imprisonment is more cruel and a moral way to teach murderers a lesson. We are civilized people, not barbarians, so why do some of us enjoy the murder of others? As in the short story The Bet, we should not gamble other people’s lives. It is not our position to do so. The death penalty is not the answer and should never be, no matter what the situation.

Testing chemicals on animals: scientific necessity or scientific crime? In 2007, the number of animals used in UK laboratories increased for the fifth year running, passing through the three million mark for the first time since 1991. Being an animal lover, reading this was a hard statistic to comprehend. Laboratories, medical institutes, pharmaceutical companies, and farms nationwide use animals to test the safety of chemicals such as pesticides and housecleaners. These experiments might last minutes, days, several months, or even years. Most animals are euthanized after being used in any experiment. Does this sound humane? I understand that science experiments are inevitable, but the killing of innocent mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, amphibians, birds, farm animals, and so many more is not the right way to test anything. Testing chemicals on animals is not only vile, but it is extremely expensive. Today, technology has crept its way into everyone’s lives. In my opinion, there should be another option when testing chemicals that does not involve any animal use or cruelty. Animals are vital members to our ecosystem and are living beings. Imagine if this scientific procedure was replaced with humans instead of animals. I think everyone would agree that it would be unethical and sickening. I don't understand why laboratories allow this torture, considering the odds they have against them. Many scientists and people in our world would beg to differ and will say repeatedly "it's just animals." If animals start to decrease, their predators start to decrease, plants begin to die, and soon it will have an effect on us. The cycle will not continue if animal testing persists. Unfortunately, under the Animal Welfare Act and the National Institutes of Health, any experiment can be performed if it can be argued that it is scientifically justified. This subsequently means that many animals do not have a good chance of winning the case. And then the next question appears; if the animals die in the process, are any chemicals used day-to-day in households safe? Many families have children who have died from certain housecleaners used for washing floors. Isn’t the death of innocent animals enough evidence to realize how harmful chemicals can be for everyone? Death after death is occurring, and although there are organizations in the world that protect animal rights, many people aren’t putting their voice into this matter. Testing chemicals on animals is an example of how horrendous human nature tends to be today. I hope that this terrible right becomes overruled in the near future so many animals have a chance of living, rather than being tested with lethal chemicals or having their DNA in test tubes.

Is it her hips or her head? In recent years, the media has become increasingly detrimental to the health of many women. . .literally.

Daily, we view approximately 3,000 ads, in one form or another. Now picture one of those ads: a cosmetic ad. . .Okay, and another; this time, a car ad. . .What did the women look like? Thin and youthful, right? Some of them didn’t even look real, did they? It’s because women used as models for advertising (meant to portray the “average woman”) make up the top 2% of women in their standards of beauty and build. When females see these “average women,” they feel compelled to make themselves look identical. When men see the advertisements, they set their standards accordingly, and they then feel that other women do not measure up to the proper standard of beauty. The “ideal image” created by the media is misleading, as it is not at all representative of the population.

These extremely thin, identical models used in media seem to make the brains of women disproportionate; as most women overestimate their body size. For example, a recent study shows that 11% of surveyed young women were overweight, but 50% classified themselves as such. Can you imagine?! Because of this, more and more women are being diagnosed with anorexia or bulimia. As I mentioned previously, the “average women” in the media make up the top 2% in standards of beauty and build, and most women, no matter how hard they exercise or how healthy they eat, will never be able to reach such standards. Because women don’t realize this, they become miserable when they find themselves unable to attain the “ideal look.” Studies have demonstrated that 90% of women claim to be on a diet at any given time, showing escalated amounts of low self-esteem, which often leads to eating disorders. The low self-esteem can also lead to depression or compulsive eating.

The majority of women (of all ages) are dissatisfied with their bodies; however, the number is much higher in young girls. Studies have shown that 70% of girls in grades 5-12 say that magazine pictures influence their “ideal look,” and the same percent feel much worse about themselves after seeing the pictures.

Girls, I’m sure you can relate to the idea that we have to look like what we see on TV, in magazines, and on billboards (if you can’t, congratulations). It hurts to feel inadequate, doesn’t it? And boys, think about your sisters, mothers, and other female relatives and friends. Do you want the wonderful women in your life to cry themselves to sleep because they physically can’t look like the females on TV? Do you want them to have to go in and out of care because the media handed them an eating disorder? Of course not! We need real models; they can be pleasant-looking and pretty, but they must be representative of the population. Otherwise, our female population will be sickly and lacking self-worth, leading to many other problems. Real women are beautiful too.

You might think you have it all; a loving family, a roof over your head, and a home-cooked meal every night. This is not the case for approximately 750,000 Americans. While my personal situations might not always be the best, I constantly remind myself that at least someone has it way worse than I do. You know the little thing we pay on half the things we buy. A little thing called taxes. Believe it or not, the American government spends about 3.1 TRILLION dollars a year. Our taxes go to building new roads, fixing up buildings, and past and current military. I found something in common with those three. They all go to improving America.
When I look at the homeless rate in America, it completely saddens me. Then, when I look at what the government does with our taxes makes me even angrier. When I think of “improving America”, I think of the people. Don’t the people make up America? Isn’t every citizen in America free? Doesn’t every citizen need food and shelter?
The government is completely dumbfounded about the real issues. I know I might only be 16 and not know much of everything, but what is the government doing? I personally believe that maybe the government can take about 25% of the taxes, and putting that to a cure to decrease America’s homeless rate. Is that too much to ask? But, believe me, it is.
New York City is a perfect example. Doesn’t it make you completely torn inside when you see all the homeless people with nothing begging their lives away for money so they can eat? I know it strikes me hard. If our taxes go to this, I bet you’ll see more than half of them in shelters with food.
Take some time to look at it like this. Imagine a deeply beloved relative homeless. You have no idea what their current health conditions are. You don’t know the last time they’ve ate. You don’t even know if people have been abusing them. You don’t know their current location or you don’t even know when you’ll see them again. Well, this is the current case for about 750,000 American families. If that doesn’t hurt you or make you cry, you honestly have no heart.
Our government should wake up and look at what the real issues are. Let’s really “improve America”. Let’s not build new roads or build new bridges. Seriously, do we really need them? You can travel over them without fearing your life, can’t you? That goes exactly to my point.
This issue might not sound as important compared to abortion or the death penalty, but this issue is super close to me. I know someone will always have it worse than me, and this will never change. Let’s decrease America’s homeless rate because I do actually have hope.

Some of us are already counting down the days until our 17th birthdays. Most, if not all, can’t wait to be able to drive. New Jersey has one of the latest driving ages in the country, and I think that the driving age should be lowered. For most adults their argument is that teens are not safe drivers. Well, in some regards that is true, but many teens or new drivers just don’t have experience. Experience driving a car doesn’t come from waiting, it comes from actually driving. A lower driving age gives teens more time to learn in an atmosphere with their parents, and at sixteen there is more of a focus on learning the wheel and the car. The fun comes after the basics.
I would have very little experience with my parents around if I start driving at 18. I turn 18 in May of 2011, less than a month before I graduate high school. Before you know it I am on my way to college and I have only been driving for 3 to 4 months! A lower driving age leads to more experience; more experience leads to safer drivers on the roads.

Nearly 20 million Illegal Immigrants reside in the United States. The school systems all across the country have made a second language mandatory, a big one would be Spanish; but why I ask, do we have to learn there language if they are in our country?
First of all anyone who is not supposed to be in our country should be immediately sent out and await there green card. It is unfair that children who were born in the U.S., and who are legal have to learn a language for people who don’t even belong in the country.
Of course knowing another language is good in the career of a business man or woman who would like to travel, it still should not be a mandatory class. Half of the high school population does not even know English fully and they expect us to learn an entire second language. These classes are given once a student hits first grade where most children are only six years old!
Given these Spanish classes are only once a week and simple terms like colors and numbers, but a six year old does not know English let alone the capacity to learn Spanish. My brother who is in sixth grade and eleven years old does not know how to spell ‘suppose’, yet they want him to be able to spell words in a different language and then grade him for it?
It is unfair to single out Spanish Americans of course but if you do not know English fully then an extra class should be given for them to work on it because the primary language in the United States is English. Spanish, French, and German classes in a school system should be an elective because not everyone is going to need to know Spanish, and if they say that we need Spanish for our work in the United States then we should fight it, if someone doesn’t speak English then they should learn.
I have been taking a Spanish class since Third Grade when it was first mandatory. My parents never had to take a language, granted they could if they wanted the extra credits just like we could take extra classes. When were all forty years old, how much Spanish are we going to remember anyways.

Entonces, ¿quĂ© piensa usted de las clases obligatorias de idiomas?
(So what do you think about mandatory language classes?)

In America, we are given many rights by the Constitution. We are allotted the freedon of speech, religion, property and such. Also, we are protected by the Constitution against cruel and unusual punishment, but what is America's definition of cruel and unusual?

Statistics show that about three out of every ten girls and one out of ten boys are molested or sexually abused by the time they reach thirteen. It is also a known fact that most times sexual abuse occurs, it is a man committing the crime. There is no set years of jail time to be spent if convicted and this is a scary reality. There are many cases in which a molester or rapist could plee temporary insanity and face only a short couple of months in jail, if any. Sexual abuse is not a crime that can be fixed merely by hours of community service or a few counseling sessions. All victims deserve justice.

Studies involving New Jersey prisons show that ninety five percent of men convicted were abused in one way or another themselves. You would think that someone who experienced such cruelty would want to put a stop to it worldwide, rather than encourage it by practicing something that is worse than the minor wounds they may have experienced. Anybody who has been raped or molested has not only physical bruises and such, but they are also assaulted mentally. Many don't even tell of their abuse until later in life, and the person who did it to them walks free, only to do the same to others.

Sexual abuse in children is like stealing a child's innocence. Not only is it discusting, but it is completely wrong. Committers of such crimes should ALWAYS be sentenced to life in the dirtiest, most harsh jails in the country. The Constitution protects their rights, but who is protecting those of a , defenseless child? This is a crime that needs to be stopped, and it needs to happen now.

Do gay unions question the sanctity of marriage? It isn’t a question of politics or who is wrong or right but it is a question of love, and if that sounds corny so be it. Why does it if matter if it is a man and a women or two men or two women; there is no difference, each marriage stands a fifty-fifty chance of lasting, and I believe everyone deserves that chance. In the United States only two states recognize gay marriages, Connecticut, and Massachusetts; forty-three of our fifty states do not recognize gay marriage or civil unions. Federally gay marriage is not recognized under the Defense of Marriage Act. In 1967, in 16 states one third of our country; African Americans and whites were denied the right of marriage. Therefore in those 16 states Barrack Obama’s parents would not have been allowed to marry and their some forty years later has grown up to lead this nation. How can people stand against gay marriage in the name of religion? They are denying these people the right to their happiness, and no religion that I am aware of stands against happiness, and love. The Golden Rule states “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” No one denies “straight” couples the rights to marriage and happiness, there is no reason gay couples should be denied these same rights.

Ammonia, tar, carbon monoxide formaldehyde, acetone, nicotine, and arsenic, otherwise known as rat poisoning, are just a few of the thousands of deadly chemicals in cigarettes. Do you want them to engulf your body? Creeping into every inch of you, until there’s nothing left to corrode? I think not.
Smoking cigarettes should be completely banned. It is entirely unhealthy and has no benefits for anyone, including those who don’t smoke. From the early years of elementary school, to present day high school, we have been informed of the four thousand chemicals, fifty of which being causes of cancer, and yet we still continue to abuse our bodies. Is it because society wants us to conform to its sick idea of being happy? Is it due to the pressure to be “cool”? In my opinion, those who smoke can only blame themselves for making such a poor choice. No one is shoving a cigarette in their mouth and lighting it up for them. It is the person’s choice to accept what is being offered. Unfortunately, millions of us decide to puff our lives away with every chemical inhaled. We all are aware of the harm cigarettes do to our bodies, but are we as aware of the damage that it does to those around us? Secondhand smoke causes around three thousand deaths per year of innocent people who have developed lung cancer. Another forty six thousand have died from heart disease caused from secondhand smoke. Did you know that children who live with someone who smokes are at a greater risk of developing colds, infections, and asthma? It’s quite unbelievable how we are all aware of the high risk of cancer and other infectious deaths, and yet we still can’t put an end to the addiction. Hopefully after reading this, you can help end the habits of smokers, and increase their life expectancy, and those surrounding.

The death penalty is one of the most highly debated political issues of our time. Should New Jersey keep the death penalty abolished or reinstate it? I think New Jersey should reinstate the death penalty. I’m not saying the horrific painful death penalty like the electric chair or death by hanging but lethal injection. When someone gets lethal injection they receive three shots. One shot is a pin killer, another is a muscle relaxant and the final is a shot of sodium chloride, which is what stops the heart from beating.
I think that if someone takes another human life they should be given their right to a trial and a jury of their peers, but if found guilty they should receive the death penalty. Almost every person who fought against the death penalty claimed it’s not humane. Did the murderers facing the death penalty care if they killed their victims humanely? I doubt that serial killers gave their victims a pain killer and/or a muscle relaxant to their victims prior to murdering them. If people wish to argue the humanity in the death penalty, I can honestly say that I view it as quite humane. The person sentenced to the death penalty by “the needle” feels no pain due to the pain killer administered and has no conscience thought after the muscle relaxant. Isn’t forcing someone to live with the guilt of murder more inhumane than death by lethal injection? A guilty conscience can lead to depression, craziness, and possibly even suicide.
I am Catholic and I’m supposed to be anti death penalty because all life is sacred. Did Ted Bundy (a serial killer from Florida) think that all life was sacred when he went on his killing spree? I seriously doubt it because if he did think that he never would have killed the people he did.

How did it all start? The world, humans, every other species and living being on the planet that we live on. Will I ever get to know the truth? The theory of evolution shows fact after fact, but I am told to believe God has created it all for me. I have seen in school that many mammals have the same bone configuration in their arms as well as us. But it happens to be my religion the a God had made everything for me. Did Adam give one of his ribs to God so he can have a female, or did we come from an older, now extinct being. How long have we all been lied to? Why is everyone trying to tell me something different? One person tries to prove the establishment of the church wrong and this person gets excommunicated. Is the church feeding us lies and hiding the truth? Do they even know the truth themselves? These lies have gone on to far. Who will find the truth and expose it? You know the truth, I know the truth, expose it. You have the power to find the truth on evolution. The church just wants to hold us back and make everyone think they are correct. But I am suppose to believe what my religion tells me. But do I have to?

Homework… how much is too much? Many high school students are overly stressed because of the pressure put on them by teachers, parents, coaches, and even their friends. Homework is just one more thing that teenagers have to worry about in addition to their schoolwork, sports, and social life. Many teachers do not understand how much homework they give to students, and they sometimes assign it for no reason at all. I believe that more time should be focused on the work done in class, and homework should only be assigned for leftover work from class. Some teachers really need to think about how the student feels, and they need to lighten up on the homework assignments.
One thing that teachers truly need to take into consideration is the fact that most high school students have about seven classes a day. When multiple teachers assign homework in one night it can be overwhelming for students, and there actually might not even be enough time in the night to finish. Another thing that teachers need to realize is how many books and binders us students have to bring home from school for homework. I for one have been unable to finish all my homework at home because I simply could not fit all my books in my backpack. Many days I have had to leave books in school, and attempt to finish homework the next day in homeroom, in other classes, or even in lunch. This is just too much of a hassle for students, and it can be very stressful. One other thing that teachers also have to realize is that many teens have so much to do on the weekends not even including hanging out with friends, or spending quality time with family. When teachers assign weekend homework, and projects students can be confined to their bedroom all weekend never even to see the light of day because of the homework. I personally have spent many a weekend in the house doing projects, and having to give up fun times with friends and family also.
Homework may be somewhat helpful in the long run, but I think it’s not worth all of the suffering and sacrifices students go through. Teachers should really lower the amount of homework assignments, or at least shorten them to keep high school students sane. Students need to have a life other than homework, and I think the six hours a day five days a week of school is enough.

School is a place where students go to get an education. Every day we spend generally six and a half hours a day there, five days a week. If we spend so much time in school, shouldn't we be taught our full education there?

Many teachers this year have begun to use online classrooms to provide and teach a student's education. While most of a lesson is taught in school, partial part of it is posted online and expected to be learned and absorbed by the student. Most teenage brains basically work the same way, and I know for a fact, being a teenager myself, that my teenage brain absolutely does not absorb information nearly as well by reading online than it does being explained and taught in class. Taking notes in class as a teacher is explaining them creates for a better understanding of the lesson as opposed to reading it online. Many students won't even take the time to go to the online classroom to read the lesson if they are not forced. While they are in class, they are basically forced to take notes and have something to listen to and pay attention to because that is what they are there to do. There is much more distraction at home where a student is expected to learn on the online classroom. A computer alone is one of the most distracting things in a household. If a teenager is expected to go on the computer to work, many can say that work is the last thing they will be doing once they log on to the internet. Games, videos, instant messages, and websites such as Facebook or Myspace are immediate distractions when using the computer. As a personal example, I myself always check my Facebook and instant messenger before I do any work on the computer because they are the first things I even look at when I log on. I can also honestly say I checked my Facebook and IM'ed a few friends before I wrote this essay!

With all of the technology in this era, computers are constantly changing, and constant changes also means constant problems. Many students who are expected to use online classrooms generally run into many troubles with their computers such as crashes, freezes, or needing to restart their computer- just as anyone else would need to do. Certain online classrooms require different and specific programs to be able to run properly on the computer. Therefore, if a student does not have the certain program on their computer, they will need to install it. Many parents do not allow teens to download programs or software onto their computers because it makes them more susceptible to viruses. While working on different projects in an online classroom, students often have specific time limits and/or due dates they are required to complete assignments by. Also, they can even be so limited to the number of attempts they can use on the test, quiz, or study guide. In this case, students generally worry about their computers freezing or terminating the program. If this is to happen, usually you are out of luck. This leads to incomplete or late assignments and grade dropping. Bringing home that extra book and worksheet seems like less of a hassle and worry than this comment aspect of the online classroom.

I started using an online classroom this year called TR Teach. Many of the teachers in my school use it to post minor things such as grades and extra credit, but I do have a class that requires this website to complete homework weekly and tests on occasion. There are study tools on this website that I will by no means say aren't useful, but I have noticed a drop in my grades in this particular class, and I find it to be my hardest class of the year. I also know of other students who are not particularly fond of using it to complete such heavy assignments as well. The online classroom can be a helpful study tool, but for many constant assignments and partial learning it just is such an inconvenience and struggle as for keeping and maintaining good grades.

Online classrooms are used much more in college where students are in school much less time and only take classes that are essential to their majors and career paths. Time management in high school is definitely a hassle as it is by constantly juggling school time, activity time and homework time. The added time and stress of the online classroom makes it much more difficult for students to maintain their lives without being beaten down by stress and more time management.

Through the blazing hot days of summer and the artic temperatures of winter, some poor dogs are chained outside to brave these conditions alone. It disgusts me to know that some people care so less about their pets that they would chain them up outside and just leave them there. Chaining dogs is horrible and inhumane, and there are other options that will keep man’s best friend safe and happy.
To get one thing straight, I have no problem with keeping a dog chained depending on the conditions. If it has clean water and food in range, a dog house to go into during bad weather, and if the owner will be back within a few hours, then that’s perfectly fine. If you’re keeping a dog chained to a tree in the middle of a hot July day, with no water or dog house, then that’s absolutely unacceptable. It’s disgusting how lazy some people can be. How long can it possibly take to fill up a water bowl and put it outside? Dehydration for dogs can severely hurt them, even kill them. Just by giving them water can greatly reduce the risk of losing your beloved pet.
Secondly, if dogs are left chained up for long periods of time, they develop psychological damage and become extremely territorial of their little space. Some dogs may get so territorial that they attack anyone who walks into their territory, even a little kid. In March 2007, a young girl named Carolina Sotello was mercilessly attacked by a chained male dog next to a female with puppies. Unfortunately, Carolina died from severe neck and head wounds. The dog was not a vicious one until it was chained outside for a long period of time. This goes to show that even the sweetest of dogs can turn savage if treated like prisoners.
Lastly, chaining dogs is bad for they’re physical health as well as mental health. Many times when dogs are chained for long periods of time, their necks develop sores and become raw from trying to pull away. Some dogs’ collars embed into their necks, which along with the excruciating pain, is extremely dangerous to its health. Leaving a dog chained outside with open wounds is very hazardous. Biting insects and scavenger animals find chained dogs an easy target. Believe it or not, there are people in the world who steal dogs, and leaving them chained up in the open could not make the thieving easier. People steal dogs and sell them to research institutions to be animal tested on, or use them as bait for animal fights. I get enraged thinking about my dog being poked and prodded and injected with chemicals at an institution. Even the thought of my little girl screaming while being viciously attacked by other animals kills me inside. If you love your dog as much as I do, wouldn’t you want to prevent that from becoming a reality?
In conclusion, keeping your animal safe isn’t hard at all. Chaining it for long periods of time can be dangerous to your dog and others around it. Truth be told, animals can’t talk, but they feel pain as much as we do. Would you like having a chain around your neck during extreme temperatures with nothing to protect you? I think you would choose otherwise. Just a little love goes a long way.

Most people are against having security checks on everyone that plans on boarding a plane.. but why? If you have nothing to hide then you shouldn't sweat it. Our country needs to be as cautious as possible, we don't want another incident like 9-11 to happen ever again. Guns, drugs, and knifes are a few dangerous things that can easily be removed from a person with these security checks. Wouldn't you feel safer on a plane knowing that everyone was checked and passed the test? I know I would. Flying on a plane is nerve-wracking enough, you shouldn't have to worry about the other passengers too. If a person is caught with a weapon (even a pocket knife), in my eyes they should not be allowed to ride the plane. If they have excessive pills or any sort of drug, they should not be allowed either. If a person refuses to, then they definitely should not be allowed to. For example, your going on a family vacation with your husband/wife and two kids. You are a little nervous as you see the other passengers board the plane, not knowing what's under their coats or in there bags. But if you have security checks on everyone you would not have to question your safety or your family's safety. So if you listen to me, you can sleep soundly on your plane to Disney World!

Although most of us are too young to remember the excitement of the "Space Race" during the mid 1900's. The US and the Soviet Union clashed to see who would be the first to reach the stars and the moon. Ever since then, even after America reached the moon in 1969, we little Earthlings have been wondering, "What happens when we don't have Earth anymore. Where do we humans go?"

I, my fellow Earthlings, am here to tell you that this time is much too far off to even consider. Our children's offspring's young's descendant's posterity will be the bearers of this burden. But why even force that on them. Do we look to escape Earth, or do save Earth from needing to be escaped from at all?

For millions of years, we have abused Earth to the point where things are not the way they should be. Polar Ice Caps are melting away because we cannot control what we put into the atmosphere, and you think the answer is to look for a different place to live? When a child does not listen, do you look for a new child? When your shower breaks, do you find a new house? No, you teach your child, fix your shower, and we solve the problems on our planet.

It won't be too late until the sun burns out or the sky falls, and until that day we must look around and see what we can do. How much hairspray do you really need. Is carpooling really that much of an issue? How much energy does it really take to walk to the trashcan. Why doesn't your house recycle?

I'm reaching out to you all because I am going to live on Earth for the rest of my life, and if you are listening to me, so are you. We won the race to the stars 40 years ago. That goal was accomplished, but after that, we should have turned our attention away from the stars and back to the grass next to us. Don't make the same mistakes the last generation did. Look Earthward for answers.

Animal Endangerment. This has become a serious issue around the world. Each day animals are dying because of the environment, disease and poaching. The only times we see endangered animals are in the zoo, not in their natural habitat. Is this our fault? It partially is. Animals are going to die eventually but studies show that they are dying 10,000 times faster than if there weren’t any humans. Our polluting and destroying their home for our resources is one way we are harming them. Another is poachers. Poachers are people that are illegally killing animals. This is happening world-wide. Endangered animals like elephants and rhinos that are found in Asia are being poached for their skin and horns. The climate is also another factor. Animals like the polar bear are being affected by this. The climate change is causing them to have a hard time to survive. Disease is a problem too. Some animals become sick and then pass that sickness to another animal. Some sicknesses are caused from pollution. Also when an animal die it affects other animals. It can interfere with the food chain. There are many organizations out there that are helping these endangered animals. Even though there is a lot, there are still a lot of animals dying each year. If there isn’t enough help these endangered animals will become extinct.

Over half the population of the United States is considered to be overweight or obese. Is this because we eat too much, are too sedentary, or is some of it caused by genetics? The answer could be all three. When we look at obese people we call them "fat". Fat discrimination is one of the last acceptable prejudices. People think you can't change your race or your skin color, but you can change being obese. It's not easy. Some people are addicted to food just like an addiction to alcohol, but you can't stop eating. It's like the opposite of anorexia and bulemia. Over eating can be caused by many things, stress, anxiety, dpression, it's called emotional eating. Fat discrimination is everywhere, in schools, listen to the kids laugh, in the workplace, obese people are less likely to be hired than normal weight people and in public, try sitting in a movie theater seat. Comedians joke all the time about being fat and get big laughs. Obese people are looked at differently, that they can't control themselves. Michigan is the only state in the U.S. that has an anti size discrimination law on its books. Why can't we be more like Michigan? Let's stop being the persecutors of obese people and remember that they are people too with feelings. We need to look at all people not only on the outside but on the inside too and know that good people come in all shapes and sizes.

I feel as if many teens these days think they know everything about anything. I hear people in the hallways saying "I'm eighteen now and this is stupid how I can enlist in the army and fight for our country's freedom, but I can't buy alcohol." Do they really know that the people who are in the army, if they are under the age of twenty-one, they get a certain license allowing them to legally drink alcohol? Underage drinking is a major problem today all over the world. Our bodies are not developed yet to drink the amount of alcohol consumed by an average teenager today. Do people realize the things alcohol does to you? When kids my age drink, it really makes me think about how irresponsible they are.
As I was reading Diane's essay about how kids are so anxious to get their licenses that they have countdowns, do you really think some of our peers are ready to take on the responsibility of driving at such a young age. I know myself that I can't wait to get my license so I can stop having my parents driving me everywhere I go, but honestly, would you see a kid like me going to a party, getting drunk, and making such an idiotic decision as to driving home? Yeah, I don't really think so.
My brother Sam is an EMT, and he told me that more than one half of the alcohol related accidents he has gone on call for, has had an underage drinker involved. Most teenagers don't consider the consequences that come with drinking alcohol. There is a never ending stream of stories in the news about how many deaths are caused by underage drinking and driving which lead to accidents. Kids don't know, or sometimes don't seem to care, that when they drink, their also hurting others as well. Do they realize the damages they could be doing to themselves mentally, their bodies physically, and their victims as well. If my best friend started drinking, I would honestly be so upset because I feel like it would be tearing us apart as friends and getting in the way of our friendship. If you are caught underage drinking and you are on a school related sports team, you're not only letting down yourself, but you're letting down the whole team by getting kicked off. From a recent experience of a drinking incident, our school's cheerleading team is suffering because of one single girl's stupid decision. This incident is just a microcosm of the effects and fallout of underage drinking. Some may say that they should lower the drinking age, but I feel as if America is being really lenient about the age. Do you think your friends are ready to start drinking and throwing their lives away?

I have realized that people seem to feel that drugs and alcohol solve everything. But do they really solve anything at all? I think not.

I, and anybody who knows anything about me can tell you that I have MORE than plenty to say trying to getting my point across on this subject. I don't think doing drugs and drinking alcohol solves any of life's obstacles. It doesn't do anybody any justice. The only thing that these things do is ruin lives, inside and out.

A person who is consuming either of these things is destroying themselves inside. These things eat away at your system and sometimes never leave, even after a long period of time. Eventually it will kill you. What does this solve? Nothing.
The way people act after doing a drug, or when they drink too much of an alcoholic drink is probably the scariest thing to see. If there is something that you feel is horrible going on in your life, and you decide to take few extra pain killers and drink a few glasses of vodka, is the problem really going to go away? No, of course not.
A person can only stay drunk or high for so long, and once the high has worn off, you come back into reality, and the life problem you tried to escape from is still going to be there. It is never going to go away because you decided to get high or drunk with your friends last weekend, for example.

Speaking of friends, they are possibly the largest influence on each other in life, whether it be positive or negative. Whenever friends see other friends doing something stupid like drinking or getting high, they either:

A) Give in to peer pressure because they are afraid that the friends won't accept them;
OR
B) Try and get their friends to quit because drugs and alcohol aren't the cool thing to do.

I actually have a friend who I am so proud to say that I had an influence on. This friend of mine was a drug and alcohol abuser for a good year of their life. I had found out about this problem through another friend, and I felt really disappointed in them. I came to find that the main reason why my friend did what they did, was because the people they were hanging around with convinced them to doing it. As a result, I tried my hardest to keep my friend away from this other group of people as much as possible because all they did was cause trouble for my friend. I thought of the situation this way: The more time I spent with my friend being a good influence on them, is less time my friend spent with the bad influences in their life. Over time, I helped my friend realize that they didn’t need drugs and alcohol in their life. Now my friend is completely drug and alcohol free. They still thank me to this day for helping them turn their life around. Doing something like helping a friend out can solve a lot.

So why give into the negative influence, when all it does is ruin everything a person can have going for them? Athletes can lose the scholarship of their life because they got caught at a party, or showed up to practice completely high one day. Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle completely smashed can result in someone's life changing within a matter of seconds. Whether it be an injury or death, it rarely ever turns out well.

So yet, after such a long period of time trying to cram all of my thoughts into 200+ words, I would really like to hear the poor excuses people can come up with to how drugs and alcohol can solve any of their problems. I've had enough personal problems in my life that it's unbelievable. And so has everyone else, but I never once turned to drugs and alcohol to help me out. And honestly, I never plan to. I know plenty of other ways to fix things the right way, and I am proud to say that drugs and alcohol are not any part of my own life.

So do drug and alcohol uses actually solve any of your true problems? I am really hoping that you all know that right answer to that one. But if you have a different opinion, like I said, I would love to hear you're excuse.

Professional baseball players, such as Barry Bonds, who use anabolic steroids should not be permitted to keep their record breaking statistics. First of all, it is unfair to those athletes who achieved their records steroid-free. Furthermore, professional athletes serve as role models mostly young baseball players as well as those who are not athletes, but enjoy watching the sport. Lastly, large corporations sign these athletes on for multimillion dollar deals to endorse their products in an effort to lure consumers into buying their products. Little do they know they are being deceived by an athlete who is using or has used an illegal substance.

Allowing athletes to maintain their accomplishments is a disgrace to the sport and to the intelligence of the public or fans. For instance, Barry Bonds, a player for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Fransisco Giants, recently broke one of the most sought after records in the history of baseball. Bonds claimed the record for the most career homeruns when he hit his 756th homerun August 7,2007. Prior to this Bonds was suspended, but returned to baseball. Soon afterwards, the baseball officials began to debate over the credibility the records, such as Bonds and others, and a proposal was made stating that an asterisk next to the names of players who achieved these records under the use of records. That issue is still being debated, but should be enforced.

Players such as Bonds need to be held accountable for their actions. They have responsibilities towards themselves, their fans , and the large corporations who count on them to boost their sales. By using steroids to reach their goals they are cheating themselves and others of America's greatest past time; The game of baseball.

"...there were either two or three people involved or more in this or someone was shooting with an automatic rifle." -Governor Connally

Can we trust our government? On November 22nd, 1963, disaster struck Dallas, Texas. John F. Kennedy was assassinated at Dealey Plaza. It is believed the government was involved in his murder, while the other arguement strongly resides on the "Magic Bullet Theory". I have come to believe the government is suspicious. How does a bullet make 7 wounds in two men and re-appear mysteriously intact?

Lee Harvey Oswald was announced the murderer for this case. Did he do it, or did he just take the cake? It is said Kennedy was shot by Oswald from the 6th floor in the Schoolbook Depository Building. When Oswald testified, he claimed he was out to lunch on the first floor of the same building during the assassination but was not involved in the murdering of Kennedy. There was proof his statement was accurate. Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby two days after Kennedy's death. Keep in mind, Jack Ruby is part of the Warren Commission. Also, witnesses noted clouds of smoke visible from the Grassy Knoll and swears this is where the real murderers were. They stated wary men with rifles romed the streets downtown before the murder. What happened to these witnesses? Eighteen died spontaniously after their testimony, within a three year period following the assassination. Coincidence, or covering up evidence?

The government formed an organization called the Warren Commision. The purpose of this assembly was to investigate the assassination of Kennedy. The only piece they concluded after several months of 'aggressive' investigating was that Oswald was a one-man show, and no one else was involved in any way. Hard to believe considering the way Kennedy and his driver were shot had to come from different directions. No, says our 'trustworthy' government. The "Magic Bullet Theory" declares one bullet was shot, went through Kennedy's throat, into Connally's back, shattering his 5th rib, and finally ricocheted into Connally's thigh.

Was this the act of a single hateful Communist, or possibly the tactics of a conspiracy?
