I believe that my close friend Brian is very similar to Ralph from Lord of the Flies. Brian is a friend from my church’s youth group. He is a freshman at the University of Delaware but won’t begin until next semester. Before I go to in depth I’d like to share a little background on him. Brian underwent a bone marrow transplant from his sister in July. Brian, so far, has had high cell counts along with high spirits for a long time now. I think that he is a great example of someone with perseverance and other people so aspire to be like him. Not only did Brian have a bone marrow transplant, but he also had TWO bouts with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He is comparable to Ralph in many ways. First of all, he fights for what he believes in a never gives up; as long as I have known him I have also known him to be leader. In the book Lord of the Flies Ralph is the so called chief and he calls the meeting ,tells others what needs to be done, and he does what doesn’t get done ,done. For example, when he stresses the need for shelters to the group Jack and the choir boys say that they are hunting and the littl’uns are too focused on playing and having fun so Ralph and Simon built the shelters for the boys. Brian is a strong leader and hard worker, and never leaves a job unfinished. Also, in the story, after Piggy’s death Ralph is the only who is for a strong and organized government. Eventually, Ralph is hunted and almost killed but he never gives up on what he thinks is right. Once again, Brian is the same way. You don’t want to be on the opposite side of a debate with Brian. When he puts his foot down there is no budging it. It’s there and there it with stay. I believe that Brian and Ralph are strong leaders and strong people.
My brother, Sam, is a senior in our school, and reminds me much of Piggy. My brother is the kind of person who nobody seems to try to get to know. When I was reading "Lord of the Flies," the first person i thought about who reminded me of someone was my brother. As like Piggy, Sam is not understood. I feel as if my brother is not the skinniest person you will meet. Sam has many characteristics to him, that nobody seems to realize how valuable they are. He is a very kind, generous boy, but no one really seems to notice that. He has a lot of great ideas, as does Piggy, and not many people take them into consideration. Sam is more of the quiet type which not many people seem to listen to. I honestly would say that he is one of the most mature, and respectful persons you could possibly talk to. Sam has more common sense than anyone i have met. Also, which reminds me of Piggy, is that Sam does not grow his hair out. He is constantly shaving it bald. Piggy's hair could not grow out, and yes, at that matter, they are different, but still very much alike. Sam doesn't get along with everyone also like Piggy. He likes to have things go his way also, which reminds me of Piggy as well. I thought about this a lot, and whenever somebody says my brother's name, the image of Piggy instantly shows up in my head.
Firstly, I'm going to straight out say this: Anna, you are my inspiration for this post, and I'm hoping you're totally okay with this. I couldn't find the more perfect person to write about, but her. Anna knows I always tell her she's my 'idol' and here is where that comes into play. I think Anna is very close to the personality of Piggy. Both, Anna and Piggy and true adults for being such a young age. Anna is smart, very dedicated, sophisticated and intellegent, like Piggy. Piggy is very conscience about the small things in his possesion, like his glasses, just as well as Anna. Like Piggy and the boys, you hear stuff about people and you don't know what to believe. When I was in eighth grade, I had heard a lot of things about her, but I know in my heart, that you can't judge people without meeting them hands-on. But, when I met her for the first time last year, I totally thought different of her. She's a beautiful person inside and out. Just like Piggy, people don't judge her properly. She strives for perfection in everything she does and she comes up with some good ideas. For example, when Piggy thinks a sundial would be the perfect contribution to their simply unjust, rocky world. When I think of Piggy, I think of someone who is smart and can do almost anything, and that's what I see in Anna. When Anna is in the 'zone', you don't hear much from her. Piggy comes off as a very quiet person. Just like both of them, they try to be nice to everyone(but, in Piggy's perception, this changes), and not once for the whole time I've known Anna, she has not yelled at anyone, ever. I bet everyone can agree with me on this one, but when you think of Anna, you think of a strong, well grounded, sophisticated person, just like Piggy, and Piggy and Anna would totally fit on the same level. This is probably a surprise to Anna, but Anna, I know in my heart that you are a strong person, and you will never let anyone push you around, like Piggy.
I believe that my cousin Kellie is a lot like Jack in Lord of the Flies. I have made this assumption by many of there similar traits. In the book Jack is portrayed as a sadistic, savage boy. He is also portrayed as a leader, and does whatever he wants.
My cousin Kellie is around sixteen years old. She reminds me a lot like Jack because of her leadership qualities. She does what she wants, when she wants and how she likes it. She will try and sway others to do the same, to become almost her followers. Her sadistic ways of thinking, just as Jack's, are some what disturbing. She isn't crazy or anything, just a little different. She goes to the beat of her own drum you could say.
I would love to point out a couple of scenes in the novel. They all have to do with Jack bullying Piggy. One could be the stealing of the glasses, not giving meat, name calling and of course his ultimate death. My cousin is a lot like this because if something doesn't go her way then she takes it by force. It's actually quite funny now that i realize how alike they are. Jack’s way of thinking is a lot in the mind of a dictator, someone who rules by shear force. I wouldn’t say she is like him that respect, but does enjoy being bossy. I think a lot of the reasons why she comes out portrayed like a leader is because she is the youngest out of three children. She has always had to fight for her spot in the pecking order of her family. She does actually boss around her older siblings, mostly her older sister. Jack can be seen doing this to Ralph who is dominant over him.
Now she is not a savage killer, but she does have her own mind and will not take no for an answer. Jack is like this as he fights for leadership and ultimately does take it from Ralph by breaking the Conch. She isn't easily swayed towards something and if she's upset or angry she will take it out on you. I love my cousin to death, but sometimes these things about her annoy me. Jack and Kellie are both strong leaders with the ability to control others, and sway decisions. Each are bullies, and rebellious to life’s consistency; and both have strong, defined personalities that can make you hate them or love them.
Simon. A boy with angelic features; close to nature. Similar to Ralph, yet so distant from the rest. Unaware of his importance, but all the while aware of his destiny. His personality resembling that of a very dear friend of mine. Her name I won't reveal for personal reasons, but she deserves to be heard. The way Simon knows what's best for all, is identical to the way my friend thinks. She's intelligent and beautiful, both inside and out, even though others may not realize it. She has good judgment and is wise, as is Simon. My friend has many great years ahead of her, and I'm positive Simon would too, if he were able to continue his life. Simon is shy, though he should be heard. We, as readers, can understand his longing to be understood. The only problem is he won't try. My friend lives the exact same way. She's mature for her age, and should be able to voice her opinion. I wish she would have more confidence, and quit living Simon's life. I don't understand her logic behind why she doesn't attempt to be known, but one day, she will be. I don't know how or when, but it will happen. Until then, she will always be thought of as Simon in my heart.
If I could compare anyone in Lord of the Flies with anyone, it would be Roger and Scott. Don't worry, it is not the Scott in our class, a different one. This Scott is just pure evil in every way just like Roger in the story. Sometime's Scott will just mess with you and make you upset for his own sick pleasure. You would not have had to done anything to him in the first place. I would think he just lives off of seeing others upset. As in the story when Roger is throwing the rocks at the little kids, he would just hold his Sharpie marker by you, but not touch you with it, just to see you freak out or tell him to bug off. If you react poorly to him in anyway he will overreact ten times worse than you had done to him. From the story if someone is to poke fun at someone or attack someone like Jack does to Piggy, and Roger nudges him out of the way; Scott will be the Roger and the next one to step up and make fun of you. The evil in him is undescribible. I have truely never seen him do anything truely nice for anyone or be nice to anyone since i had met him in the sixth grade. When I had to choose a person to resemble Roger, he was the hands down first choice.
Percival, one of the lesser characters in Lord of the Flies, is easily missed and kind of in the back round throughout the story. He is easily upset by things and gets himself worked up over matters that don't make the most sense sometimes. Although he is the frequent crier among the group and comes off as the weakest, I think he is one of the strongest characters in the novel. His strength may not lie within his emotions, but within his heart. When something upsets him or distracts him, he shows it and deals with it the way he sees fit. Instead of getting angry with others and seeking the act of violence, Percival keeps to himself and just cries about it, letting his issues out of his system. Through this he has no need to cause problems, which is a strong character trait to possess. I don't have anyone special to compare to Percival because I see many of his character traits similar to my own. Yes, I am the quiet, lesser seen person way out in the left field of the life I live in. I'm not noticed often or paid much attention to. As Percival does, I tend to stretch situations out way more into what they are or what they should be and turn them into an epidemic. I've been told by my friends, especially by my swimming teammates, that I need to chill out and worry less. When I get worked up and frustrated I do cry often which turns the situation into en even bigger deal then I had already made it by freaking out in the first place. I have this problem the most with swimming, especially this year being that I'm trying to qualify for Shores. Swimming season isn't even here yet, and I've already cried about it on more than one occasion. I've definitely driven most of my friends crazy with the consistent rambling and worrying about swimming coming up. I've heard "DON'T WORRY IT'S NOT TIME YET!" from numerous friends and teammates, but the fact of the matter is- I can't NOT worry because it's not who I am. It's naturally in my nature to worry to the highest extent about everything. Swimming is the most important thing in the world to me, and when something is that important to me, it eats up most of my thoughts and concerns. Although I wish I could chill out and feel more comfortable with it, I'm somewhat proud of myself for caring so much about something and having something so important to me. I think it shows how much potential I have for sticking with things and setting goals for myself. Although Percival isn't worried about his 100 yard butterfly times for the upcoming swim season, I know he has worries that are as equally important to him. The fact that the poor kid can't even remember where he's from is pretty serious, and I'd be stressing out about it if I were in his position. This character trait, I think, shows how strong one's mind and heart is. It shows how much can be achieved by putting so much effort and care into something. With Percival, I think his biggest issue is remembering where he is from and who he is, which can tend pose as a pretty big problem for people who haven't fully realized who they are. I can definitely say that I haven't exactly figured out who I am yet either. As Percival is a "little'un" who has plenty of years to figure out who he is, I think he has the mental maturity to be worried about it at his age, although he lacks the emotional maturity. I think at our stages in life at the moment, Percival and I are better off to be seen from at a distance, or hardly at all because we still have some figuring out and observing to do. Perhaps later on in life those who under viewed and misunderstood us will realize that we used this type of attention as an advantage to shape our futures.
I love the character, Jack, in this novel. He reminds me a lot of myself. He likes to be the leader, but he doesn't always know what's best. Like Jack, I love to take advantage and be a leader when it comes to volleyball, but I never know how to do it. Also, he likes to take charge of a group and get the job done. Just like him, I love to take command when doing a group project and might do all the work myself just to get done and make sure all the work is done properly. Jack cares a lot more about what is happening in the present, and he doesn't really worry too much about the future. He takes life one step at a time and lives in the moment. Jack might go overboard at times, but it is only because he thinks he is doing what is best. Also, Jack is an independent person. He depends only on his tribe and doesn't expect any help from Ralph and the other boys who follow Ralph. Just like Jack, I don't expect or accept any help from anyone who is part of my family or a really close friend. Jack and I live life alike and share the same motto: live in the moment and stick to your instincts always.
My two six-year-old cousins, Katie and Logan, are truly the spitting image of Samneric. They are not brother and sister, but they act as such as well as best friends. Although they are young, both of my cousins contribute a lot of love, courage, and togetherness. My family is very close, resulting in close relationships. Anytime there is a family gathering, Katie and Logan hug and play the entire time and are drawn to tears when it's time to say goodbye. Samneric are very close, hense the name they are given on the island. One example is when Samneric join Jacks tribe. At first, they are unwillingly forced to join and must become a part of the tribe unless they want to be physically abused. Of course, Samneric oblige without hesitation. They also switch their loyalty from leader to leader- one day they are on Jack's "side" and the next they are back to agreeing with Ralph. This reminds me of my cousins. For example, if Katie gets reprimanded for disobeying her mother, Logan will come and claim that he was at fault too, just to support her. When I think of Samneric, I tend to not think of them as disobediant little twin boys: I think of them as the last splash of whim there is on the island. In times of dismay, Katie and Logan lighten the mood and make all of us laugh. Although Samneric are obviously referred to as one unit, one person, one being, etc., I wish I could have gotten to see them develop more as people, if the story were to continue. Although Samneric are just little boys, they still will remind me of my little cousins who have (and always will) have a huge impact on my life.
In some ways, Ralph is quite similar to a good friend of mine. Both are mature for their age, and both are deep thinkers. Ralph and the boy I chose to compare him to possess good leadership skills. When Ralph calls his assemblies, he knows just what he wants to address, and uses the conch as a symbol of authority and a way to ensure that no one will interrupt anyone else. When working with my friend in a group project, one can count on him to stay on topic and have good ideas and input. He also tries to ensure that everyone in the group contributes something to make everything fair. Ralph and my friend both tell things as they are, although Ralph is a bit more condescending in doing so than my friend. When Piggy asks to go on the expedition with Jack, Ralph, and Simon, Ralph says that Piggy would not be good for a job like that. When I am unsure about something, I always ask my friend for reassurance, because I know he will “tell it to me straight.” Ralph and my friend are both strong in their opinions and feelings. When Jack betrays Ralph by letting the fire go out, Ralph keeps repeating to Jack, “you let the fire go out,” and says that they could have been rescued, getting more and more worked up as he explains this. My friend is very good at debating, because, like Ralph, he is strong in his beliefs. When someone does something stupid, he tries to explain why it was stupid, and when the person does not follow the importance what he is saying, he gets worked up just like Ralph does about the fire. Both Ralph and my friend need to know they are liked from time to time as well. When Ralph wounds the boar, he “sunned himself in their new respect,” but after the death of Simon, Ralph goes back to his old self for the most part. My friend sometimes enjoys “fitting in” with the crowd, but when all is said and done, he is still himself. When Jack taunts Ralph with a challenge to hunt the beast on the mountain, Ralph rises to it so as not to put his virility in question. My friend rises to challenges just like Ralph did on the mountain. Both Ralph and my friend are true leaders, and both are people to look up to and learn from.
I believe that one of my good friends, Tom, is like Simon. Tom is a boy in my church youth group who deals with alot of stuff and tries as hard as he can but still believes he isn't good enough. Tom is like Simon because both of them believe that they are evil and will hurt the ones closest to them. Simon knew that the Beast lived in them and wasn't afraid of them as all the other boys were. One of the quotes pertaining to Simon is when the Lord of the Flies tells Simon that he is inside all of them and they will never beat him. The Lord of the Flies also confirms that Simon knew that all along. Tom also believes that there is evil in all of us, and that how we act depends on if our "good side" is stronger then our bad side. Tragically, Simon is killed in the end by the boys that were driven mad by the fear of the Beast and torn apart. My friend, Tom, isn't killed in the physical way but sometimes I think what people say about him kills him spiritually. Throughout the novel, "The Lord of the Flies" Simon is shown and represented as a Christ-like figure who is pure good but knows the truth of all humans. Tom is pure good and understands that people do have evil sides and good sides. I believe that even though we have "good" sides and "bad" sides we can't judge others only by their behavior. Yes, behavior can tell some things about people but it never tells the full story. Before you judge people I think that you should try to befriend them because they could end up as a better person then you intially thought.
I know a lad named Peter who, while not actually looking like a pig's head on a stick, is a very spiritual fellow. The Lord of the Flies is very sly and clever, allowing Simon to realize the evil in everyone, almost a symbol of looking inside yourself. When talking to Peter, I look inside myself and find qualities that I didn't know I had. Peter can point out a fault or a stupid remark and through the wisdom of Peter, I do my best to get rid of that fault. The Lod of the Flies can be said to personify the devil, but I think he is more of a realization that we aren't perfect. Peter is the pig's head on the stick that keeps me from making a total fool of myself. I understand Simon's confrontation with the Lord of the Flies. When I'm conversing with Peter, his overwhelming ability to point out my problems and short comings could swallow me whole, and the evil pig's head just laughs and giggles and chuckles and guffaws and jests. And when a certain shortcoming is particularly short, the whole forest of people around him laughs and I cannot avoid being encompassed by the pigs mouth. Silly pig head, silly Peter.
Samneric are identical twins that might as well be one person, they go every where together think together and finish one and others sentences. It is almost a scary thought when you think that two people can be so exactly alike, but my friends Mike and Kevin are almost the same way. They are seventeen and they still go almost every where together, they share a car when if they really wanted to they could both have their own and they work together and do the same sports. It is impossible to tell them apart aside from the fact that one of them has braces and they dress almost the same way everyday, sunglasses baseball hat some baseball t-shirt. They play baseball together at their high school and Kevin is a pitcher and Mike is the catcher, they almost feed off each other just as Samneric do.
In Lord Of The Flies Samneric are the last convertors to Jack’s evil tribe and are more or less forced into it, Mike and Kevin are the same way especially at sailing. They always do what they think is right and never follow others. Kevin is my coach and he always told me to stay away from the fleet and just sail my race, which most of the time paid off. Although they might seem a little crazy they have more fun then anyone I know and always seem to make some kind of joke no matter what the situation.
The Lord of the Flies is a character very similar to a close friend of mine. My friend, who shall remain unnamed, is very quiet. She does not say much, but like the Lord of the Flies, you can tell what she is thinking by her facial expressions. In the novel, the Lord of the Flies does not really speak aloud to Simon, but is still heard. He doesn’t actaully speak at all. This friend of mine also has a way of being heard without speaking. She has the ability to bring anything to your attention through a glare. You can also read her emotions through her eyes. In example, when Simon comes in contact with the deceased sow, he is able to conclude that the beast is within. Their expressions are like a puzzle that you want to solve. You want to be able to figure out what they are thinking. My friend is also able to bring out the best in people. Though my friend is definitely not a severed head being offered to a beast, she often puts her head on the chopping block before it is yours. In example, if we were to get into any form of trouble together, she would offer herself up to whomever we were in trouble with. I don’t allow her too take the full blame for any mess we get into, but if I did she would be the thing keeping me safe from the beast, just as the Lord of the Flies does for Jack’s tribe. They say the quiet ones are the ones to watch out for, but I think they are really just watching out for us.
My older brother Dan, reminds me a lot of the character Roger, from Lord of the Flies. Its only natural, being his sister, to claim he’s evil. Like Roger in the story, he tries his hardest to have some sort of power around us. But, their always seems to be someone much more superior than he will ever be. For example; my father. Or in the story, Jack. But I’ll admit, Dan is not always evil. He’ll taunt you, but sometimes he manages to not cross the line. Just like when Roger was throwing the rocks, he knew better not to hit the little children. When he’s being cruel, he doesn’t show much sympathy like Roger hadn’t when threw the boulder, or the spears. Dan loves “pushing the envelope” so much, that you would just love to smack him across the face. As much as I would to do that, I can’t. I’m scared of the result. Like the kids in the story were afraid of Jack and Ralph. They knew the consequences would quickly follow. In my house we have a rule that if one of us hits the other, they are entitled to hit you back twice as hard. I learn my lesson very, very, quickly. As would the kids in the story. I can’t remember the last time, Dan was just my older brother. Not my Evil Brother.
Percival is not that big of a character in lord of the Flies, but he is very important. Percival reminds me very much of my younger cousin Zach, as they are alike in many ways. Both of them are little kids and they both can be considered "cry babies" in a way. When either of them don't get their way or something goes wrong that they don't like they will just cry. Although Percival from "Lord of the Flies" has no one to comfort him, and my cousin does. In the story Percival cries on many occasions, such as when he finds out about the beast. After there is talk about the beast all day Percival is so scared that cries to himself all night long, all alone. This is very similar to my cousin because he has no self control, which basically means if he were to be frightened, and he started to cry then he may just go all night if he didn't get something to comfort him. Another time that Percival cries is when him and the other Little'uns are playing in the sand, and Maurice and Roger trample there sand castle. All of the other little'uns seem to get over it and move on to something else. But Percival on they other hand just begins to cry like the little baby he is. This is another huge characteristic of my cousin. If he is playing with his toys or watching TV or anything like that and you disturb him, or mess anything up he either scream and yells or he wil cry. I don't exactly know why the two boys Percival, and my cousin Zach act this way but it is obviously something that that they might not even understand. It may be a longing for attention that they might not receive, or it might just be that they are spoiled children, and when something goes opposite to what they want they cant deal with it. Either way both Percival and my cousin are little kids, and maybe this is something they will grow out of, but in the mean time we will all just have to deal with it.
Although the Lord of the Flies does not play a dominant role in the story, i believe it signifies the feelings and actions of these boys. The Lord of the Flies character reminds me of a character in a movie i saw. In, Donnie Darko, the main character, Donnie, goes insane due to an evil spirit-like figure telling him to do unimaginable things. Instead of a sow's head on a spear, Donnie's evil was represented as a giant rabbit named Frank. The evil icon in Donnie Darko tells Donnie to burn down houses, he leads Donnie to find a gun, and he tells him to flood his school. Donnie becomes a vicious, savage person. The Lord of the Flies is identical to the graven image in the movie. The sow head positioned on the spear represented the evil, fear, and anxiety in every single one of the school boys on that island. The idol represents hate, savagery, and disorder that had formed on the island. It is the pure anti-christ, and eventually gets into everyones' head, including Simon, the christ-like figure in the story.
-Cassie
Although the Littleun with the birthmark has little dialogue in this novel, I feel that he is the indirect cause of the quick rise of savagery on the island, somewhat like how Marco Polo was named the indirect discover of the New World. By this I mean that Marco Polo traveled around China writing about the riches there and how much money was to be made by trading that when he returned to Europe with these writings, merchants were in a frenzy over finding an all water route to the Eastern world. This eventually led to the inevitable discovery of North America. As Marco changed the world forever, so did the Little’un with the birthmark change the worlds of those children residing on the island. There was stability and a form of self government reigning over the island before the Littleun decided to stipulate that there was a “beastie” harboring in the darkness. This act alone sped up the process of the backwards spiral of evolution from human to savage. Now, we all know that the transformation from human being to ferocious barbarian was unavoidable, chiefly because all inhabitants on the island were male, the Littleun’s allegations about the “beastie” leads to the killing of the sow, the deaths of Simon and Piggy, the near-death of Roger, and all over revolution from mortal to beast. I believe that both Marco and the Littleun opened up a can of worms by magnetizing the curiosity of merchants, and little boys. Both of these people brought desire to others, whether it be the yearning for an all water route to Asia, or the craving for the murder of a wild animal.
My sister, Lu, reminds me of Roger in "Lord of The Flies." Just like Roger, Lu is mean and conniving. Lu is older than me, so like Roger she picked on the littlun, which in this case was always me. She would team up with my brothers and they would pick on me all day. The team of my brothers and my sister reminds of Jack and Roger's choir, and how childish they were. Lu hides in the background like an evil secret leader. She always wants some power or saying when she is with our whole family. My sister did not let up picking on me. My brothers both kind of acted like Jack in this situation, because they would tell my sister to pick on me or help her to do so. I would not say that my sister is very savage like, like how Roger is, but she is like a mini dictator and mean to the littlun, me. As we have grown up she still kind of acts like Roger, but lucky for me she has college so I don't really see her as much. To me, I'll always look at her as the Roger figure in the house.
The little'un with the birthmark reminds me of my little cousin. He may not talk alot, but that doesn't mean he's not important. This poor little boy is stranded on an island with older savage-like kids. My little cousin seems so young and innocent compared to the kid's she hangs out with, alot like the little'un with the birthmark. Maybe it's just through my eyes, but she seems angelic compared to other kids. I believe his birthmark is a symbol of his differences with everyone else on this crazy island. My cousin is also different from the rest of the kids, because she was diagnosed with Leukemia when she was only 9 months old. To start off, the little'un knows that something bad is going to happen, when he starts talking about a beastie. He is the first to sense evil, and the first to be killed. Orion (my little cousin), is always the first to be nice to someone, but also always the first to be made fun of or put down. I believe most kids only ask angelic when there parents around, with the except of a few. I believe the little'un with the birthmark is an exception to that. He seems to stay civil on the island (with no parents around), while everyone else seems to enjoy having no rules. This poor little'un was probably an easy target to make fun of. He was tiny, had a birthmark, and was scared of a beastie. That is why he was the first to go, because in the real world if your an easy target to pick on, your doomed. The little'un's death shows us when being civil stops and being savage begins.
The parachutist in the story reminds me of my older brother Michael. The parachutist was a soldier, defending his country, and ended up dying for his country. I know my brother would do anything to defend his home, his family and his country. When the boys found the parachutist, he was seen as the beast on the island. When the wind blew he would raise up and look very scary and threatening. Sometimes, I see my brother as a beast, (what sister hasn't), and he can seem scary and threatening. But the parachutist is dead and couldn't hurt anyone. I know my brother would never hurt me or his friends or his family. The parachutist was lifted out to sea and could not cause trouble anymore. My brother would sometimes just go into his room or leave the house if he got too scary for me and then he wouldn't be any trouble anymore either.
One person from Lord Of The Flies that is similar to someone in real life is a littleun named Phil. I can relate him to my little sister ,Shannon. They are similar because their one of the youngest out of the group and people don't always believe what they say. Phil was one of the littleun that dreamt of the beast and know one believed him at first. Then later on people started to believe him. This also happens to my sister. We don't always believe what she says because shes the youngest.
My 9-year old cousin Ryan relates the most to Phil in Lord of the Flies. I think he is similar to Phil because he is the youngest in his house. His sister Carly is 13, and his brother Robert is 15, and neither of them (sometimes including myself), ever listen to what Ryan has to say. Whenever I would stay over their house, we would all sleep in the spare room upstairs. Ryan would always get scared and say that he saw something moving in the corner of the room, and being a lot older, my other cousins and myself would just tell Ryan that there was nothing there. Ryan would always get so mad that we never believed him, and would always try so hard to get us to see the object moving in the corner. But one different night after that when I stayed over their house, when we were all upstairs going to sleep, my cousin Robert and I noticed something move in the corner. We immediately thought, 'Wow, Ryan might actually be telling the truth', but never mentioned it to him because we didn't want to truly scare him (and then just convinced ourselves that we were just seeing things). Now my cousins and I know that whenever Ryan is trying to tell us something, we should be a lot nicer and listen to what he has to say, because he might possibly be right.
I believe my co-worker Cross is alot like the dead parachutist. I believe this because the parachutist died for his country. Cross always talks about the country and the wars he has fought in. Even experiencing war injuries twice, he kept on going back out to war. If a man was willing to die for his country I'm sure he loved it very much. If this man loved his country as much as Cross does, he would have died three times for it. In another way, the parachutist died alone, I believe Cross will die alone too. Cross' fiance died 2 years ago in a car accident, and he is still in love with her. He will never try to find another woman. Once he dies he will be rested, and knowing how crazy Cross is, he will die in a painful way like the parachutist.
In "The Lord of the Flies," the character Wilfred reminds me of a friend of mine, Arnold. Wilfred and Arnold are similar in ways such as they dont stand out from the crowd much. They both just stay back and keep in there own opinions to themselfs. Wilfred doesn't play much of a role in the book, but his character is much needed, somewhat like my friend Arnold in my group of friends. Without Arnold, I would not know what to do.
Maurice may not be the nicest or the gentlest of the bunch, but he reminds me quite a bit of me when I was younger. Now don't get me wrong, I didn't find killing animals enjoyable, but to my little brother I was not exactly the nicest girl around. Now that I think about it, he was a "slave" to me. In my kitchen, we had one of those chairs that rolled around on the tile floor and spun around. I was about three years old at the time and my brother was around one or so, so he was mobile and able to walk around the house. I would make him push me around in the wheelie chair and yell at him if he didn't do it, but he never objected and continued to follow orders. In the novel, Maurice kicks over sand castles constructed by the littleuns. I can say I did the same thing to my little brother as well. In my brother and I's relationship back when we were young, I played the role of Maurice and my little brother was the littleuns all in one person. In another example, Maurice had sow's blood smeared on his cheeks showing his new savage nature. Another flashback to when I was little was when my little brother and I would have mud wars, which was when we would throw mud at each other and make mud forts, like snow ball fights except with mud. I would get completely engulfed in the war attitude and smear mud on my face in tribal patterns and just get so savage about it. Well now that I'm 12 years older than my old Maurice self, I can say that I'm definitely not as mean to my little brother as I was back then, but sometimes my savage nature rears its head every now and then.
I suppose it's hard to say 'my friend' for Jacob. Because I don't know what we are anymore, which is why I say, he is like Percival. He knows what's right, he knows that he needs to work towards something, to remember. But he doesn't, he forgets. Like how Percival forgot his name and address, Jacob forgot who his friends were. He joined wrestling freshman year and abandoned his friends for what he considered popularity. He forgot what he had, what he loved and cared for, and gave it up for darkness and hurt. Or at least, he gave darkness and hurt to the people he left behind. And i'm sure the people Percival forgot miss him, just as much as I miss Jacob. And if he ever reads this, I hope he knows it. Maybe it'll jog his memory. Maybe he'll remember those Karaoke nights we had at his house. Maybe he'll remember walking through Browns Woods, and scaring me when we went Trick or Treating.
